City and Region - Iserlohn
The city of Iserlohn is with its 95,000 inhabitants the largest city of the Sauerland region. Located in the heart of the state of North-Rhine Westfalia it is close to the major cities of Cologne, Dusseldorf and Dortmund as well as the highly populated Ruhr-Area. Iserlohn is shaped by industry, with a lot of industrial buildings from the early 20th century still visible, location of two universities of applied science as well as a German major league "DEL" ice hockey team, the Iserlohn Roosters.
The city was founded in the 10th century past and received municipal rights in the 13th century. Iserlohn became a center for metal craftsmanship in the middle ages, and the town was famous for its chain mails worn by knights and soldiers all across Europe.
At the turn to the industrialization in the early 19th century Iserlohn was even larger than most of today's major cities in the Ruhr area, but a lot metal works remained. Before World War II barracks were built in this strategic important city. After World War II the barracks were taken over by British, Canadian and later also German troops. After the fall of the iron curtain, the barracks were closed and transformed into residential or commercial areas and one became the campus of the BiTS founded in 2000.
